Bow thrusters have 3 drive types: electric drive, hydraulic drive and engine drive. Engine drive type is the one with the simplest construction. It can directly control the thruster and save cost a lot. An additional reversing gearbox is required if the thruster is powered by a diesel engine. When the vessel is docking or steering, this engine bow thruster could be used as auxiliary propulsion to improve maneuverability of the vessel.
