A cardinal mark is a sea mark used in maritime pilotage to indicate the position of a hazard and the direction of safe water.

Cardinal mark is settled in the four quadrants(north, east, south and west) which makes the dangerous or hazardous area as its center, namely, northwest~northeast, the northeast~southeast, southeast~southwest, southwest~northwest, respectively marking that the mark’s side of the same name is navigable waters. Cardinal mark can be also settled on the fairway turn, branch confluence or shallow end.

East cardinal mark is set at the eastern direction of the dangers or hazardous area. Ships should sail in the east of the subject.
